This paper reflects on the role of population in the construction of territorial development based on the assessment of the aptitudes of that population. Studies of capital social as well as territorial identity lead today to analyze the non economical factors on the construction of territorial networks of knowledge and therefore they allow advancing from assisted territories to innovation ones.

In this paper, we attempt a crossing state of the art of innovation concept, through exploring the both corporate and territorial significations of this notion.
