WPBIN: [innovation]

(led by Jean-Guy Henckel)

This Work Package aims to firstly make an inventory of all the social and environmental innovations, especially within the third sector (a field that gathers very varied economic initiativesthat belong neither to the capitalist field nor strictly to the public sector) firstly in Europe and then at the international scale.

On this basis, the WPBIN will review the available documents and proposals concerning innovating initiatives and then debate their relevance and innovating dimension.

Then, this Work Package team will lead a reflexion on the means to convince civil societies, economical and political stake-holders to get involved in the development of innovating actions, so as to disseminate innovation in all the human activities and consequently to participate to the socio-environmental transition launching.

Simultaneously, the WPBIN members will draw a definition of an “innovating project” and make a repertory of the European innovating initiatives, which will be scientifically studied.

Concept and objective

One of the main characteristics of the post-industrial societies consists in the importance they give to innovation. Indeed, we speaked much about innovation for few years but it has already been a socio-economic component of our economies and societies for decades and many theoretical works were published on this issue. On the contrary, it is fairly difficult to find information on concrete innovating implemented actions.

This work package is devoted to present the European and international innovating initiatives, and above all to underline and analyse the nature of their specific innovating added-value. The involved team will also make a stock-tracking focusing on the few most original and relevant recommendations made by social and environmental innovation practitioners and theorists to disseminate innovation in the present and future societies.

On this basis, the WP members will work on the widening of the selected recommendations at the European and international scale. They will also think about the arguments and tools to convince political stake-holders, firms and also civil societies to integrate them in their actions. They will particularly identify the most appropriate ways to convince political stakeholders to support the socio-environmental innovation dynamic and to integrate this dimension in their actions, as it is a key-element to succeed in the socio-ecological transition.

The WP will adopt a research-action methodology so that both actors to integrate in their projects the recommendations made by practitioners involved in social and environmental innovating projects and researchers working on this issue. In accordance with this methodology, they will then make practical recommendations in order to convince main stakeholders to increase the innovating character of the actions, plans and training they design and implement.
