Pecs 2008: Second conference of the European Network of Territorial Intelligence in Hungary

In collaboration with the caENTI (Coordination Action of the European Network of Territorial Intelligence), the University of Pécs (Hungary) organized an international conference of the European Network of Territorial Intelligence. The subject of the conference, that took place at the end of May 2008, was “Territorial Intelligence, territorial information, indicators and tools”.

The Research Team on Territorial Development and Information & Communication Technologies of the University of Pécs has been contributing to the European Network of Territorial Intelligence since 2003. This is the second ENTI conference that takes place in the city after the 2004 one that was organised within the REIT (Réseau Européen d’Intelligence Territoriale) framework.

The main topic of the conference was regional information and methods, indicators and tools use. The scientific lectures presented during the conference concerned territorial intelligence, the relations between labour market and regional competitiveness, the relations between research activities, ICT and their background, employment and research activity in human geography, the human resources management in South Asia and the socio-economic transformation of Dalits in Independent India.

The conference workshops concerned the same topics.

The theme of the first workshop was territorial development and its tools. We could hear about: territorial consciousness of ethnic minorities, role of the green civil organizations in Southern Transdanubian Region, learning and research activities in virtual space and mental and community mapping.

The topic of the second workshop was new territorial approaches and methods in sustainable development and new territorial processes in regional development. In this workshop, we debated about the globalization issue and about new regional processes of development and participative construction of the territorial strategy.

The title of the third workshop was territorial information and territorial competitiveness. The presentation themes were the micro regional social processes in sustainable development, the e-government services and the fifth level of CLBPS (Common List of Public Basic Services), regional competitiveness and local development and the competitiveness of Hungarian cities.

In the fourth workshop, the fundamental methods (caENTI Workpackage 4) reports were presented by each caENTI coordination group responsible.

Next to the conference, the University of Pecs organized a welcome party at the Paulus Cafe where the university rector Róbert Gábriel welcomed the participants. The conference participants also visited Siklós “Fontányi Pincészet” the most southerner and Mediterranean wine-country of Hungary.
