With the handing over of the Presidency of the European Union from Slovenia to France on 1 July, CORDIS, the Community Research and Development Information Service, has launched a new internet portal giving access to information on research and development (R&D) activities under the French Presidency.

Research Infrastructures (RIs) are playing an ever increasing role in advancing knowledge and technology throughout Europe. More however could be done to increase their profile, which is precisely what the creation of the European Research Infrastructure Web Portal intends to do.

The kick-off conference of the European Development Cooperation to 2020 (EDC2020) project will take place in Brussels, Belgium, on 2 June. The project, funded under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), will investigate emerging issues relating to European development cooperation.

EDACwowe (European Data Center for Work and Welfare) is the META-DATA-SHELL for European research and policy making in the areas of work and welfare. EDACwowe gives information on and direct links to comparative and national, quantitative and qualitative data on work and welfare and closely related fields.

Thursday, May 29th the press conference Observation Group of Leon, (GOL) took place in the Acts Room of the Caja España. This observatory, that was created in 2006 with TheMA-IT accompaniment (Besançon, France), is an experience included in the caENTI workpackage 6 works.

María José Asensio Coto, Doctor in Economics and Business sciences has just been nominated General Director in charge of Climatic Change and Urban Environment by the Junta de Andalucía. She has got a vast experience as professor and member of the Observatorio Local de Empleo (Local Observatory of Employment) of the University of Huelva where she worked in close relation with the caENTI project, and more precisely with the workpackage 6.

The Faculty of Scienze della Formazione of Salerno University and the caENTI project organise an International Conference entitled “Comparison among European Educational Systems” on May, 15th and 16th 2008. This conference objective is to compare the educational systems of some EU countries with the fact that institutionalized educational processes strongly affect the children’s mental development.

The project of a European master of “Territorial Intelligence: Space Information and Planning” of the University of Franche-Comté (of Eastern France) received a very good assessment from the Agency of assessment of research activity and higher education (AERES). The master “Planning and governance in the southern countries” which is a remote special field received a very good assessment. It is a big step for the Erasmus Mundus European master of Territorial Intelligence.

The Franche-Comté General Secretaryship for the Regional Affairs (SGAR) entrusted the implementation of a huge survey at the Franche-Comté region scale which is called: “Representations of Europe in the Franche-Comté region”, to the Institute of Humanities, Social and Environmental Sciences C. N. Ledoux (MSHE).

Presently, more than thirty communications were sent for the International Conference of Territorial Intelligence of Besançon (caENTI). These abstracts, which will be examined by the scientific committee in May, already allow organizing eight workshops. At the request of several participants, a new delay to send the abstracts was defined: it is June, the 15th. Regarding the latter, there will be a second review period.

Ethnographiques.org, the online journal of humanities and social sciences, publishes its fifteenth issue, coordinated by Laurent Amiotte-Suchet and Véronique Altglas.

Celia SÁNCHEZ LÓPEZ, of the University of Huelva, brillantly passed her doctoral thesis “Propuesta Metodológica para el estudio de la segmentación de los mercados de trabajo locales. Un estudio empirico, inductivo y multidimensional” on March, the 6th 2008. This ambitious research activity, which object is the segmentation of employment local markets, crosses an empiric study, an inductive step and a multi-dimensional integrated approach at the territorial scale.

District V Integral Plan in Huelva has been selected by the Spanish Committee for Habitat Best Practices as a candidate for the 2008 Dubai International Award for Best Practices, United Nations Human Settlements Centre. The District V Integral Plan will be included within the Spanish Best Practices Catalogue.

The Asociación Tierra Nueva and the Observatorio Local de Empleo of the University of Huelva, two members of the caENTI, are part of the project since the beginning.

After the Workpackages (WP) 6 and 4 in Liege (Belgium), the calendar of the caENTI next scientific coordination meetings was defined.

The Workpackage 3 of the caENTI, in charge of communication and edition, met on March, the 28th 2008 in Besançon (France) to define the kick-off modalities of an international digital scientific journal in Territorial Intelligence. This journal will be called Journal of Territorial Intelligence.

The Town Inter-ministerial Delegation (DIV - France) published a document that allows valuating the European good practices for “Economy and employment in the urban ailing areas”.

In 2007, Patrick ITALIANO, researcher in the ULG (Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences), chose Ougrée-bas as a ground study concerning the way to favor the reconstruction of social link on a territory in reconversion. This research action, which is widely linked to Optima activity, led in December to a report for the IWEPS (Walloon Institute of Studies, Prospective and Statistic) about identity and social capital in the Walloon region.
