The OLE scientific expertise is based on the following applied research fields:
- Sustainable Development: Environmental issues, Socio-economic Development, Local Development, International Development and Cooperation.
- Labour Socio-Economy: Labour Market Mechanisms, Configuration of Local Labour Markets, Social and Labour Policies.
- Socio-economical Disparities: groups and territories inclusion and exclusion.

Methodologies applied to socio-economical and environmental research
Research and teaching activities comprising including its scientific background have accredited OLE as a Group of Excellence: - Spatial studies and diagnosis on social, economical and environmental issues (studies, labour market studies and diagnosis, development of spatial action plans for employment, for social inclusion and Sustainable Local Development, integrated strategies for employment and social inclusion) at different territorial levels,
- Management, assessment, advising and technical assistance in local, regional, national and European projects focused on development and application of action strategies for employment and social inclusion.
- Design and application of strategic assessment and observation to facilitate the public and private actors' decision making in social policies.
- Training both, undergraduates, post-graduates and experts, in Local Sustainable Development, Social Economy, Local Employment Strategies and Socio-professional participation and insertion.
